Based on the weather forecast we decided todo the route in the opposite direction to Walkhighlands, that way the wind would mostly be at our backs while at height.
Parking at layby 79 on the A9 we headed down the tarmac path to take the annoying u-turn under the railway, to join the track that first heads over a small ford. We followed the track on the north side of the Allt Coire Dhomhain river, over several ups and downs for around 3km. Just after a small burn, we struck up a path towards the summit marked 902m.
Around half way up we stopped to have an early lunch as we were unsure of conditions on top for a longer stop. The climb to the ridge was wet and steep at times, as well as some snow at the steepest point that in hindsight would have been easier with spikes on, but we managed without.
Once on the wide ridge it was a pretty easy walk west south west along a well defined path interspersed, with old metal fence posts, towards the point marked cairn, then south west along some rockier terrain, to the highest Munro of the day, Beinn Udlamain. We only hung around long enough for some photos, before continuing south to the bealach around 800m.
We took another short rest at this point before an easy push east up to a small cairn on a wide plateau at around 940m. Now turning south east heading up an gentle incline to the main ridge which heads north east over a well defined path to the second Munro of the day, Sgairneach Mhor.
From here, we descended north east for what seemed like miles, but was only around 2km, eventually leading to a crossroads. The main path heading up to point at 758m, the south to the bealach below the Sow of Atholl and the north, the path we picked to head down to a bridge over the river and back on to the track from the morning.
The muddy path first contoured around the front of the small summit and then headed steeply down an atv track, which was slow going due to how muddy it was, the bridge at the end was quite a relief.
Once back on the main track we managed to pick up our pace to make it back to the car within the guide time of 6-7 hours. We boiled up a quick cuppa at the car before the long two and half hour drive home.
We only met two other people the whole day, probably due to the misty tops, and just our luck, only around half an hour off the last Munro, the tops began to clear, and by the end of our hike, all summits were mist free!!
